What a grounded floor makes available

When the floor is grounded, the individual contains their experience rather than discharging it into their relationships, their economic decisions, their political behavior, their ecological impact. They can perceive abundance because they are not braced against sensation. They can make long-horizon decisions because they are not tunnel-visioned by the scarcity-crouch. They can be moved by others' reality because their own nervous system is not at full capacity managing its own dysregulation. They can play.

What a depleted civilization cannot register

When the floor is depleted, none of this is available. And the crucial move of this book — the move that makes it something other than another wellness manual — is to trace what happens when floors are depleted at scale. A civilization of depleted floors cannot perceive the membrane it is leaking through. It cannot, literally, register the costs it is externalizing, because registration requires the cholinergic resolution that the depleted floor cannot provide.

Not a moral failure, not an information failure, not a governance failure in the first instance — but a substrate failure, one floor at a time, aggregated to civilizational scale.

The thesis that makes the rest of the spine possible

If the biases are floor-deficiency symptoms, then the behavioral economics built on them is a description of a pathological baseline, not a description of human nature. If the externality is a membrane-leak traceable to depleted perception, then the ecological crisis is not primarily a policy problem — it is a floor problem, which is to say, a solvable physiological problem with a known maintenance protocol and a measurable mechanism.

Fix the floor, and the individual changes. Change enough individuals, and the economics changes. Change the economics, and the civilization can complete. And when the civilization completes — when it closes the membrane it has been leaking through for three centuries of industrial growth — the noosphere becomes available. Not built. Not constructed. Available. The way a grounded floor makes play available: not by manufacturing it, but by removing what blocked it.
